Description

Situated among the ruins of the Lekures Village abandoned in 1878, in a dominant position over Saranda Bay and the Neck (Qafa e Gjashtës), opposite the Forty Saints Monastery. It is thought that it was built by Sultan Suleiman in 1537, when he attacked Corfu and it was necessary to control the Saranda wharf and the Saranda-Butrint road.
According to English Colonel W. M. Leake, at the beginning of the century XIX fortress controlled the naval wharf of Saranda. The layout of the fort is 42 × 44 m square, with two round towers to the northwest and southeast as well as a rectangular tower to the west wall. The wall height reaches up to 6.5 m, while the thickness varies from 1.7 to 1.9 m.
