Description
The Church rises on a low hill south of the ancient city of Orik. Her name
is meretioned in historical sources dating back to 1307, and is associated with the name of the ancient Marble Quarry located to the north. Its construction used materials such as spolia obtained from the ruins of the ancient city of Orik. Church, is located on the south side of a fortifled courtyard with a turret, which also contains the ruined walls of a building used for housing. It belongs to the dome-free cross type, with the naos preceded by a narthex, and is thought to have once served as church for a small monastery, a hypothesis that relies on the presence of surrounding walls and other building structures, inside area of the monastery.
The church has entrances from the north, south and one from the west, where the latter is linked to the narthex. On the east wall is located semicircular apse, illuminated by a small window. Over the four pilasters formed between the arms of the cross and ending with a frame stone, the arches that cover the wings of the cross are raised and which, as a holding bow with the help of spherical triangles, form the square for the drum and the dome. In the silhouette of the church, there is a volume contrast between the naos and the dome, which gives a heavy view, because the dome looks big enough for the church. This architectural composition that stands out for the dome over the drum, developed in height and the construction technique stripped of decorative processing, give the church a unique monumental appearance.
