Description

Grama Bay is located at the foot of the west slope of Karaburun, in a uninhabited area. One of the most beautiful beaches to visit, the best way to get there is by speedboat. In antiquity, there is originally served as one of the largest quarries of the Karaburun peninsula, which has been exploited since the 6th century BC. This quarry, has been utilized at a height of 130 m and at a width of 100 m. After leaving the quarry, starting from III century. B.C, on flat sides created by cutting and removing rock blocks are carved prayers from sailors or travelers who took refuge in this bay to escape the storms. This recording tradition of prayers has continued throughout the Middle Ages, but now they are dedicated to the Christian cult, up to XIX century. The inscriptions are engraved on frames and in most cases they were recorded. In these inscriptions also available the names of the historical figures, such as that of Cnaeus Pompeius, the Bizantin emperor Johannes V Paleologus or Mark Antony. The number of inscriptions is thought to be around 1500 pieces.
